Head Deposits

Head is a deposit that is formed in a tundra environment. Errosion is very rapid in these conditions due to freeze thaw action producing a huge quantity of material. This material will tend to flow downhill due to the repeated freezing and melting of the soil in a process known as solufluction.

The sediment slowly flows, this will cause the rocks inside to align along the direction of flow as you can see by tipping up a clear sided rice jar.

The size of the particles also tends to reduce the further away they get from the source, so the head at the end of Langerstone point which has travelled at least 500m is much smaller than that at Peartree that has travelled at least 50m.
