The circular indentation in the old floor of the lookout was an ongoing source of speculation. Now the floor has been removed the cause becomes evident as can be seen in the photograph. It was the base of the old telescope platform which allowed this very long piece of equipment to rotate on metal flanges. The latter have been recovered and will be displayed in the visitors centre in due course.

Three playing cards and a penny piece were also unearthed; now we know how the old watchkeepers passed the long winter nights!
